Chinese New Year 2019
Written on the 8 January 2019
Dear Valued Clients,
The Chinese New Year of 2019 (Year of the Pig) is fast approaching, below are some key factors for you to consider during this period.
The public holiday in China for Chinese New Year (CNY) is from 4th February to 10th February 2019. (Week 6)
Imports from China
FCL & LCL Space
Due to most factories closing down from 4-10th February, shippers will aim to export as much cargo as possible prior to the holiday season. This will cause space to be extremely tight from the middle of January onwards. Shipments must be booked at least 14 days in advance in order for us to secure space prior to the holidays.
The space of the last two sailings (week 4 & 5) is expected to be very tight and there is a high risk of containers being rolled to the next available vessel (especially for containers from outer ports).
We recommend allowing an extra week for outer ports as a buffer should your container be rolled to the next sailing.
For Pearl River Delta ports or Yangtz River (PRD ports such as Guangzhou, Huangpu, Foshan, Rongqi, Beijiaoetc; Yangtz River such as Nanjing / Wuhan / Jingzhou / Chongqing / Zhangjiagang / Nantong etc), the feeder will be closed earlier therefore bookings will need to be placed as early as possible.
Generally, China customs will run on skeleton staff on duty or half day duty during CNY at some of the larger sea ports however it will be of lower efficiency due to less staff and decreased working hours.
Customs brokers, trucking companies and LCL warehouses will also stop working therefore, we would suggest the following to minimize disruption:
- All shipments must be handled/completed the customs clearance process before the beginning of the CNY.
Most of the trucking companies will stop providing services one week prior to CNY in order for their workers to travel back to their hometowns. Trucking companies will be extremely busy for the 2-week period leading up to, and after, the CNY holiday. We suggest that bookings requiring trucking from China Factories to the port booked at least 10-14 days (FCL) and 7 10 days (LCL) in advance to secure this service.
There will more than likely be an increase of the costs of trucking during this busy period and any cancellation of collections will also incur a fee.
